Valorization of a Pyrolytic Aqueous Condensate and Its Main Components for L-Malic Acid Production with Aspergillus oryzae DSM 1863

Pyrolytic aqueous condensate (PAC) might serve as a cost-effective substrate for microbial malic acid production, it is an unused side stream of the fast pyrolysis lignocellulosic biomass that contains acetol and acetate potential carbon sources. In present study, shake flask cultures were performed to evaluate suitability its combination with substrates growth L-malate production filamentous fungus Aspergillus oryzae. Acetol concentrations up 40 g/L shown be utilized fungal growth. acetate, co-metabolization both malate formation was observed, although maximum tolerated concentration decreased 20 g/L. Furthermore, on PAC detoxified by rotary evaporation, overliming activated treatment studied. flasks, cultivation using 100% resulted in 3.37 ± 0.61 malate, which considerably improved pH adjustment 9.77 0.55 A successful scale-up 0.5-L bioreactors conducted, achieving comparable yields productivities cultures. Accordingly, successfully demonstrated, paving way bio-based acid.
